NYC Citywide High School Fair: 9/29 & 9/30

Citywide High School Fair: 9/29 & 9/30
The annual Citywide High School Fair will be held next weekend, Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30 at Brooklyn Technical High School from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on both days. The Citywide Fair will provide you with the opportunity to speak with school representatives and students from New York City public high schools located throughout the five boroughs and learn about their programs. Click here to access our Citywide Fair Guide, which includes tips on how to navigate the Fair as well as sample questions to ask school representatives.
The Fair will also include information sessions about the high school admissions process, auditioning for arts programs and the Specialized High Schools Admission Test (SHSAT). All information sessions will be held in the 1st Floor Auditorium. Please find the schedule of information sessions for both days of the Fair below:

The five Borough High School Fairs will be held on Saturday, October 13, and Sunday, October 14, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on both days. The Borough Fairs take place in each of the five boroughs with representation from schools located in that borough only. Borough Fair locations are available here.

Teen Night at the MAD Museum!


Going back to school? Get MAD at the Museum of Arts and Design's first-ever Teen Night! Hosted by MAD's Teen program Artslife in collaboration with the Museum Teen Summit, with performances by featured artists Maria Hupfield and Laura Ortman. An evening packed with art and entertainment, including a scavenger hunt in the Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 exhibition, hands-on art-making workshops, snacks, beverages, and an interactive performance with Maria Hupfield and Laura Ortman.

This event is FREE for teens, ages 14-19 with a school ID.

Teen Night at the Frick!

High 5, the Museum Teen Summit and The Frick Collection teamed up to bring you the FIRST EVER FREE Teen Night at the Frick!

Kick off the school year with a evening at the fancy fancy Frick Mansion. There will be sketching, gallery chats, chamber music by members of the Praxis Youth Leadership Orchestra and much more. There will also be a special surprise portion towards the end. There will be a light dinner served.

In case you've never seen or been to the Frick, go on google images and type in "The Frick Collection." We assure you, it's beautiful and you will not want to miss this night!

THE POSITION

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is seeking an experienced, hands-on Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for its Corporate Office, located in Chicago, Illinois. The CFO is responsible for the management of all financial matters of the Sorority. S/he reports to and works closely with the executive director. S/he works with the International President and International Treasurer in developing and monitoring the sorority’s operational and conference budgets, and partners with the senior leadership and the board of directors to develop and implement financial strategies across the organization.

THE SORORITYAlpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA), an international service organization, is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African-American college-educated women, founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority fulfills its mission of “Service to All Mankind” with a membership of 260,000 graduate and undergraduate members in the U. S. Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, Canada, Japan, Germany, Korea and on the continent of Africa. The corporate structure of the Sorority includes a Board of Directors (The Directorate) of elected and appointed officers, led by the International President, Attorney Carolyn House Stewart; ten regions, each led by a Regional Director; and the Corporate Office, led by the Executive Director.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATEThe Sorority seeks a strong manager who preserves the assets of the organization by running an efficient and effective finance operation and minimizing risks. The ideal candidate helps shape the Sorority’s overall financial strategy and direction, in a collaborative manner. S/he has strong interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills, enjoys stakeholder interaction, instills customer service values in the organization and fosters a system of accountability and teamwork.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA or BS degree in Business, Management or Public Administration, Accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience required; MBA or Master’s degree in like discipline preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
  • Not-for-profit accounting experience in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Sarbanes-Oxley Reporting for Non-Profits.
  • General office software, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite and Sage Fund (formerly, MIP) software or other similar not-for-profit general ledger software and use of databases.
  • Experience at the Controller or Chief Financial Officer level.
  • Seven to ten years of financial experience and management experience with the day-to-day financial operations of an organization of at least 50 staff persons.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible work hours including weekends (Regional, National Conferences and Directorate or Committee Meetings). Travel, as required (approximately 20%).

    MIST Harlem opening soon . . . stay posted!

    Wanted to let you know about a new restaurant/entertainment venue in Harlem located at 40 West 116th Street between Lenox and Fifth Avenues in the Kalhari Condos.  The brand new MIST Harlem will host a 130 seat restaurant and three intimate theaters that will present the best film, live music, spoken word, comedy and plays from Black and Latino culture.

    Young Adult Internship Program


    The Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) is a 14 week internship program, for low-income New York City young adults aged 16-24 who are not working, and not in school. YAIP is comprised of a 2 to 4 week orientation conducted by selected community based organizations, followed by a 10 to 12 week paid internships that offer structured work opportunities. Upon completion of the internship, the organization will provide nine months of follow-up services and help place the participants in permanent jobs, training programs, or educational settings.

    Dads Take Your Child to School Day ~ September 20, 2012

    This year the Dads Take Your Child To School campaign will be held across New York State on Thursday, September 20th. Last year over 200 schools and Head Start programs across the State, numerous community and statewide partners, and over 9,000 dads participated in this event. The website also provides more information about why engaging dads and male caregivers is beneficial to children, and offers resources such as templates for flyers and certificates of participation as well as suggested themes.
