Kevin Suarez is a young man I have known all his life.

He is now venturing out into the world as he has just graduated from high school in the Bronx and will be going on to a local college here in New York. Kevin is active in his community, as an Usher and member of the Communications Ministry at his home church, Beulah Baptist Church. He is also "Youth of the Year" Ambassador at the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club. I have known Kevin since his birth, and his mother, for many, many years. However, in recent years, Kevin has been an active member of my Youth Ministry. He, and his mom, who has been deemed legally blind could really use our support in helping Kevin to pursue his future goals as a Cinema Studios major at the College of Staten Island. Immediate funds raised will specifically be used to secure his room and board and assist with items necessary for his dorm room, as well as any initial college entry fees involved. Whatever assistance you can give to this young man in pursuing his future goals will be a blessing and will be used for his college journey. Starting June 8, 2015 you will have a new way to access key information about your child's progress in school. With a NYC Schools Account, you will be able to view your child's attendance, report card grades, and general student information in one of ten languages on a computer, phone or tablet.

Visit your child's school, or schedule an appointment to create an account. Be sure to bring:

The Generation Google Scholarship

The Generation Google Scholarship was established to help aspiring computer scientists excel in technology and become leaders in the field.  Selected students will receive 10,000 usd (for those studying in the US) or 5,000 CAD (for those studying in Canada) for the 2014-2015 school year.  As part of the scholarship, current high school seniors who are entering their first year of university in 2014-2015 will be required to attend Google's Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) in the summer of 2014.  Current undergraduate or graduate students will be invited to attend the Google Scholars' Retreat in the summer of 2014.  Deadline to apply is Monday, December 2, 2013.

Note, this Scholarship is open to incoming as well as current university students.

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has a newly designed scholarships page. UNCF manages various scholarship programs, and each program has its own eligibility criteria, open/close dates and required documentation. To apply for a UNCF scholarship, you must apply through the online application process.

 

If you are a student attending a UNCF-member college or university, it is highly recommended that you also complete the UNCF general scholarship application. Teaching Technology and Engineering Grant (for Teachers)

The Foundation for Technology and Engineering Educators, in partnership with Pitsco/Hearlihy & Company, is accepting applications for technology and engineering education programs at any grade level. Through its Excellence in Teaching Technology and Engineering grant program, the Foundation will award grants of $2,000 each to K-12 technology and engineering teachers to encourage the integration of a quality technology and engineering education program within their school’s curriculum. To be eligible, applicants must be teachers (elementary or secondary) who are successfully integrating technology and engineering education within their school’s curriculum. The Westinghouse Electric Company STEM Grants

The Westinghouse Electric Company is accepting applications from schools in the United States working to provide creative hands-on projects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through its N-Visioning a Brighter Future program, Westinghouse will award $1,000 grants to three schools for any project with a STEM-based focus. An additional $2,000 grant will be awarded to each school’s science department for general needs. To be eligible, applicants must be elementary, middle, or high schools located in the U. S. Your Digital Identity Matters

While doing a search in the Department of Labor’s website, I ran across this webpage on their site:  “Dream It, Plan It, Make It Happen” (http://labor.ny.gov/youth) which is geared to youth ages 14-17 and ages 18-24 (two separate tabs).  Of course, I have a 15 year old, so I decided to check it out.  Once you click on “ages 14-17” or “ages 18-24”, scroll down to “Your Digital Identity Matters”.  Click on that link and READ IT!  (Direct link:  http://labor.ny.gov/youth/14-to-17.page? or http://labor.ny.gov/youth/18-to-24.page?).  It talks about your identity in relation to social networking and the job market.  It is quite informative.  Although it is for youth, I recommend that EVERYONE read it.  It provides very useful information that we can all use.  Learn how to secure your digital identity!

The site offers other useful information, but I thought this particular section was a MUST READ!
