GirlsHealth.gov Covers Body Image, Relationships, Health and Safety

Growing girls have lots of questions—about their bodies, their feelings and relationships. But their friends may be misinformed, and they may not feel comfortable asking adults.

Introduce them to GirlsHealth.gov. It has straight talk for girls on health and body image, drugs and alcohol, relationships, safety, bullying, and more. And it’s information you can trust, grounded in science and free of ads pushing beauty products or misleading messages.

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute-NYC (GSLI-NYC), a new Girl Scouts of Greater New York initiative, ensures that girls gain leadership skills and have significant access to successful female role models so that today’s girls can become tomorrow’s leaders.

GSLI-NYC was launched in summer 2013 and helps girls in 9th through 12th grades from New York City’s five boroughs to unlock their leadership potential in order to foster a new generation of leaders who act with courage, confidence, and character to drive systemic changes and reform in their communities and, ultimately, the world at large.

World We Want Foundtion Grant (for Community Organizations)

World We Want Foundtion is accepting applications from organizations that represent youth making positive social change in their communities and around the world. Eligible partner organizations must be recognized as tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, must have a project team of one or more youths, a partner organization that supports and sponsors the team, and a project mentor to guide and advise the team. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to youth between the ages of 13 and 25 who want to make a difference through a range of social action activities, including community service projects, service-learning projects, and social ventures. The Westinghouse Electric Company STEM Grants

The Westinghouse Electric Company is accepting applications from schools in the United States working to provide creative hands-on projects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through its N-Visioning a Brighter Future program, Westinghouse will award $1,000 grants to three schools for any project with a STEM-based focus. An additional $2,000 grant will be awarded to each school’s science department for general needs. To be eligible, applicants must be elementary, middle, or high schools located in the U. S. FEMA Seeks Youth Leaders ~ Nominations accepted through April 19, 2013!

FEMA Call for Nominations to the National 2013 Youth Preparedness Council

                     Are you a 12- to 17-year old who makes a difference in your community’s disaster preparedness? Do you know someone who fits that description?

                    The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is looking for youth leaders who are dedicated to public service, who are making a difference in their communities, and who want to expand their impact as national advocates for youth disaster preparedness.

Nominations must be received by April 19, 2013 11:59 p.m. EDT.

About the Council:  FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) is an unique opportunity for youth leaders to serve on a highly distinguished national council; to complete a self-selected youth preparedness project; to voice their opinions, experiences, ideas, solutions, and questions on youth disaster preparedness with the leadership of FEMA and national organizations working on youth preparedness; and to participate in the Youth Preparedness Council Summit. For more information about the YPC and the Individual and Community Preparedness Division’s work on youth preparedness, please visit http://www.ready.gov/youth-preparedness.

Eligibility:  Youth can apply on their own, or they can be nominated by individuals who are familiar with their preparedness activities. Applicants/nominees must be between 12 and 17 years old. Applications can emphasize youth disaster preparedness activities that the applicant/nominee has participated in, or can be related to a disaster the applicant/nominee has experienced. Application narratives should describe a specific emergency situation and/or example of a disaster preparedness activity that would qualify the nominee to serve on the Council.

                    Sample preparedness activities may include, but are not limited to:

                    – Teen CERT training

                    – Citizen Corps Council activities

                    – After school activities

                    – Youth preparedness activities through a faith-based group

                    – Camp activities

            – Youth club activities (e.g., Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts)

                    – National Preparedness Month participation

                    – Increasing local disaster awareness

                    – Rural area preparedness activities

                    – Using social media to further disaster preparedness

                    – Pet/service animal preparedness

            – Underrepresented communities programs
